When Is the Best Time for Photography in Namibia? Namibia is a fantastic year-round destination, but seasons drastically change the mood, tone and lighting of your images. Summer / Green Season (November–April) Rising temperatures, dramatic thunderstorms and clear air. Best for atmospheric landscape shots with rich green backdrops. Baby animals appear and migrant birds arrive — the best season for birding photography. Winter / Dry Season (May–October) Cool and dry — the best time for wildlife photography. Natural water pools dry up, concentrating wildlife around permanent waterholes where vegetation is thin and visibility is high. INSIDER TIP Consider travelling in May or June. Excellent wildlife viewing, clear skies, lower tourist traffic and the benefit of lower seasonal lodge rates. Top Landscape & Astrophotography Locations 1. Sossusvlei & Deadvlei (Namib-Naukluft National Park) The contrast of deep orange dunes, bright blue skies and the dark, skeletal camelthorn trees of Deadvlei is one of the most iconic images of Africa. Best Time. Early morning or late afternoon, when the low sun casts long shadows that accentuate the sharp ridges of the dunes. Tip. Stay at a lodge inside the park boundaries to gain early access one hour before sunrise. 2. Spitzkoppe A dramatic mass of smooth, 700-million-year-old granite peaks rising nearly 2,000 metres above sea level. Best Time. Sunrise or sunset, framing the iconic natural rock arch. Minimal light pollution makes it excellent for night sky photography. 3. The Skeleton Coast A unique coastline where desert dunes meet the Atlantic Ocean, scattered with decaying shipwrecks. Best Time. Summer months (December–March) in the mornings after 10:00 AM, once the coastal fog has cleared. Tip. A scenic flight is highly recommended to capture the shipwrecks and dunes from above. 4. Kolmanskop Ghost Town An abandoned diamond-mining town near Lüderitz, slowly being reclaimed by the sands of the Namib Desert. Best Time. Early morning and late afternoon, when soft low-angle light streams through decaying windows onto the indoor dunes. Note. You will need a special permit to enter outside standard tour hours. 5. Fish River Canyon Africa's largest canyon offers dramatic vistas. Best Time. Sunrise or sunset, using a wide-angle lens to capture the canyon walls transforming through shades of gold, red and amber. 6. Quiver Tree Forest & Giant's Playground Unique, angular aloes set against dolerite rock formations create striking silhouettes. Best Time. Night photography under clear, starry skies. Tip. Plan your visit around the moon phases, ideally within four days of a new moon. Ethical & Cultural Portrait Photography Namibia is home to diverse, rich cultures.
